The Grammys announced the nominees for the 67th Music Awards ceremony and all your favorite pop stars are dominating the nominations. But also hard to miss is that women are dominating the landscape, making waves in multiple categories.
Leading the nominations is Beyoncé with 11 nominations for Cowboy Carter. Cowboy Carter made history as the first album by a Black woman to reach No. 1 on the Country Music Charts. With the addition of these 11 nominations, Beyoncé is the most nominated artist in history with 99 nominations and 32 wins.
That’s not the only history she’s making. Beyoncé’s double-digit nominations include Album of the Year and Best Country Album. That makes the TEXAS HOLD ‘EM singer the first Black woman in the 21st century to compete for Album of the Year in the country category.
Also announced in the recently revealed list of Grammy nominees: Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, and Post Malone with seven nominations each. Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, and Taylor Swift also landed six nominations each.
If history is any indicator, the Academy loves Billie Eilish. It’s unlikely the BIRDS OF A FEATHER singer (and her producer brother FINNEAS) won’t walk away with an award in one of the big three categories.
However, the Academy could also lean toward an up-and-coming star like they did for Eilish in 2020. That would make Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter serious contenders for the big 3, plus Best New Artist.
If either artist wins Best New Artist plus the trio of the record, song, and album, they would be the first to do this since Eilish cleaned up in 2020.
Also generating buzz is nominations for Charli XCX’s Brat. For the first time ever, Charli has earned not one, but seven Grammy nominations. Brat is a frontrunner for Best Electronic Album, a category that Charli campaigned for in the past few weeks.
It would be the 32-year-old singer’s first solo Grammy. However, she has been nominated twice for her collaboration with Iggy Azalea on Fancy—another song that ruled the summer in 2014.
Women Are Dominating Music
This year marked a significant rise in women’s influence within the music industry and culture at large. Female artists have claimed six out of the eight nominations for Album of the Year and Record of the Year.
After a year where pop stars claimed seven out of eight leading spots, women have asserted themselves this year with influential music that’s resonating across the culture and topping the charts.
Meanwhile, some head-scratchers also landed Grammy nominations. (see: Andre 3000’s….experimental…flute album, New Blue Sun, which landed three nominations) and an AI-generated song landing in one of the big three categories (see: The Beatles, Now and Then).
Next year could be different if Harry Styles returns to pop music, but he has to create music that can compete with another potential Swift record and a so far, only hinted-at upcoming Roan album.
The 67th Grammy Ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 2, 2025, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles and will stream on Paramount+ and CBS.
