Anne Hathaway has built a career that’s equal parts relentless and wildly eclectic. Since her acting debut in 2001, she’s appeared in at least one movie every year, but usually more. In 2014, she appeared in five movies.
From big-budget blockbusters to indie darlings with a cult following, Hathaway is the antithesis of a typecast. Whether she’s conquering the box office or starring in under-the-radar gems, she’s a true Hollywood chameleon.
The Many Hats of Hathaway
Anne Hathaway has cemented her legacy in film history, but she’s not just a screen queen—she’s also a formidable stage performer. With several theater productions under her belt, she’s proven herself the real deal, able to captivate audiences live and unfiltered, without the magic of clever film editing to fall back on.
And she can sing, too. In Les Misérables, a performance that landed her an Oscar (and significant backlash), Hathaway sang I Dreamed a Dream live on set without backup music, which was edited in.
Hathaway has been in two movies that have generated over $1 billion in revenue: 2010’s The Dark Knight Rises and 2012’s Alice in Wonderland.
While Anne Hathaway continues to shine in front of the camera, she’s also been making her mark behind the lens, racking up production credits throughout her career and proving she’s not just a performer, but a storyteller.
This year, she was credited as a producer for the two movies she starred in. The first is Mother’s Instinct, a psychological thriller starring her opposite Jessica Chastain. Next up was The Idea of You, which tells the story of a 40-year-old woman who begins a whirlwind romance with a 24-year-old, world-famous boy band member.
In the Pipeline
While her 2024 projects are wrapped, Hathaway has announced several upcoming projects for the coming year.
First up is Flowervale Street, a sci-fi thriller written and directed by David Robert Mitchell, set for release in May 2025.
More interesting was her Instagram announcement that she would make her return as her breakout role of Princess of Genovia in the third installment of the Princess Diaries, captioned “miracles happen.”
The third film picks up after the 2004 sequel, with the cast having teased plans for a follow-up for years—plans that never quite materialized—until now. While an official release date remains unknown, it was confirmed in October 2024 that Flora Greeson will be writing the script for The Princess Diaries 3.
Also in the works is Mother Mary, an A24 melodrama directed by David Lowery and starring Hathaway as the titular pop star. Not much is known about the movie other than it is about the relationship between a pop star and a fashion designer, but its cast includes Alba Baptista, Hunter Schafer, Jessica Brown Findlay, and Michaela Coel—Hathaway’s Instagram sneak peek promises a movie filled with jaw-dropping fashion moments and striking visuals.
Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX are set to produce original songs for Mother Mary, with singer FKA Twigs also joining the cast. Hathaway revealed on July 20, 2024, that filming for the movie had officially wrapped.
As if that docket isn’t stacked enough, it was announced that she will star as Verity Crawford in the upcoming adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s (who also wrote The Idea of Us) book Verity.
In Verity, Hathaway will rejoin Michael Showalter, director of The Idea of You, and will also serve as a co-producer. Verity was self-published in 2018 before being acquired by Grand Central Publishing in 2021. It spent months on the New York bestsellers list and has been described as similar to psychothrillers like Gone Girl and Rebecca.
Hathaway plays Verity, a writer recovering from a life-altering accident that leaves her unable to finish her latest novels. When her husband enlists the help of a struggling author to complete the work, the collaboration unearths devastating secrets that threaten to unravel Verity’s world and her marriage. Details about the rest of the cast and the production timeline remain unknown.
Finally, rumors are swirling that Anne will star alongside Zendaya, Tom Holland, and Matt Damon in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film at Universal. This will be her third time working with the famed director, and if this film is anything like the last two, Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Interstellar (2014), then we are in for a treat.
If all those project pan out and make it the box office next year, 2025 will give 2014 Anne Hathaway a run for her money.
