Hold onto your mallets. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are back in the producer’s chair, this time with an upcoming Netflix docuseries that dives into the world of polo—the ultimate playground for the elite.
Aptly titled Polo, the series promises a front-row seat to the passion, tradition, and gallop of Britain’s poshest pastime. Netflix released the trailer for the upcoming show November 21, which is slated to premier on December 10.
Polo is a competitive sport where competitors ride horseback, with each rider holding a mallet and the goal is to drive a ball into the opposing team’s goal post. It’s sort of a combination of soccer and hockey, plus horses.
Its a sport that’s near and dear to Prince Harry’s heart, who likes to play the game himself. Earlier this year, he was spotted competing in the Royal Salute Polo Match in Florida, with Netflix camera crews in tow. Harry is absent from the trailer, leaving fans wondering if his own polo skills will make an appearance in the series.
From Royals to Producers
The show will be produced by the royal couple’s production company, Archewell Productions. Founded in 2020 Archwell Productions is named after their firstborn son, Archie.
In a 2021 interview with Oprah, Harry shared that after he and Meghan had moved to the U.S., “my family literally cut me off financially.” The two set up Archewell Productions in order to generate income, or as Harry put it “afford security for us” as they started a new life across the pond.
“Our company is committed to showcasing thought-provoking and diverse narratives that highlight our shared humanity and celebrate community,” the Sussexes state on Archewell’s homepage, which emphasizes their focus on scripted and unscripted TV, film, documentaries, and podcasts.
Inside the World of Polo
Polo will spotlight several stars of the sport, including Nacho Figueras—Prince Harry’s longtime friend and a producer on the series, according to Netflix—alongside Adolfo Cambiaso, Poroto Cambiaso, Louis Devaleix, Timmy Dutta, and Keko Magrini. The series follows these athletes as they compete in Wellington, Florida, at the U.S. Open Polo Championship, offering glimpses into both their personal and professional lives.
“This series gives audiences an up-close, behind-the-scenes look at the passion and determination fueling some of the world’s top polo players,” Prince Harry told Netflix. “It reveals the grit behind the glamour, capturing the true depth and spirit of the sport — along with the intensity of its high-stakes moments.”
Harry and Meghan’s Netflix Journey
Polo isn’t the Sussexes’ first venture with Netflix since their $100 million partnership began in April 2021. On the contrary, it will be their fourth collaboration with the streaming giant.
In 2022, the couple also released their highly anticipated docuseries Harry and Meghan, which delves into their relationship, their decision to step back from royal duties.
The highly-publicized exit from the royal family, dubbed “Megxit” by the press, marked a major turning point for the couple and was the couple’s most successful production with the network to date. Harry and Meghan debuted on Dec. 8, 2022.
By the new year, Netflix reported the show had over 240 million hours streamed, with over 81 million hours logged in the first four days of the show’s release.
(Not) Off to the Races
But ever since, the couple has struggled to deliver successful productions. The Sussexs briefly ventured into children’s programming with Pearl, an animated series that Netflix ultimately shelved in 2022.
Harry and Meghan then followed up with Heart of Invictus in 2023, a documentary spotlighting injured veterans preparing for the 2022 Invictus Games, the global sporting event founded by Prince Harry, but according to Netflix data released in May of this year, the show only brought in 300,000 viewers.
If trailer views are any indicator, Polo is off to a rocky start. In the four days since its release, it only has 114,000 views and fewer than 1,000 likes. By comparison, the Netflix trailer for Wallace and Grommet: Vengeance Most Fowl, released the same day, has nearly seven times as many views, and 38,000 likes.
While polo may not be on the brink of overtaking football or baseball as America’s favorite pastime, Harry and Meghan’s latest project might just persuade viewers to take a break from holiday movie binges and see what its about.
Or it might be another royal flop for the couple’s partnership with Netflix.
